“We — human beings — are like a house, you know? A house where each of us is a brick. We are connected, but each of us carries our own burden, our own weight of existence.”
The bricks at the very foundation have it the hardest. They are often seen as “low-ranking people,” but somehow, they are the ones doing some of the hardest and most important work in our world. Without people like them, the entire system of our existence would collapse. Yet, sadly, neither their work nor their wages are valued anywhere near what they are worth.
The higher the rank, the higher the “brick.”
As you may have already understood, through this symbolic gesture I explore the class structure of our world: at the top — the privileged, the more free; at the bottom — those who are restricted and constrained.
The expressions on their faces speak of different emotions, from indifference to dissatisfaction — which, sadly, reflects the potential their social position allows them to have.
The hands, shown in gestures of asking or giving, hint at the unequal exchange of energy between those who take and those who give. It reflects the imbalance of the modern world.
The IV drips running from their hands emphasize the depletion of our planet’s resources. The Earth, pierced by tubes, seems to be at the very limit of what it can endure — battered, exhausted, and dried out.
The stormy sky is my favourite symbol in my paintings. It reflects my personal sensitivity and anxiety. It creates the feeling that something is building up…
Above this whole pile of faces, I painted an eye — a symbol of something greater watching us. Whether it is God or the Universe, this “higher” force is watching over us. And despite all our attempts to separate ourselves from it, or to come closer to this omnipresent force through religion, we remain far from the truth.
The flowers are symbols of beauty and hope. They are my faith in humanity. I keep trying, carefully, to see the potential of the human soul within our society.
The phallic-looking cannons on either side are a metaphor for patriarchy and its destructive influence. They refer to the nature of conflict and power.
It is a literal and deliberately provocative gesture in my work — a scream:
“Pay attention, human!
We are drowning ourselves by destroying each other.”
We are drowning ourselves by destroying each other.”
Why, after thousands of years of human existence, have flowers still not grown in our souls?
This is my philosophical vision of us as one whole.
And this painting is my honest social statement.
